On the 50th anniversary of the Siege of Jolo, four organizations have come together to recall an event that has barely scratched the national consciousness. Government officials at the time downplayed the incident, reporting on it only on February 14, 1974 after the center of Jolo municipality was secure. Casualties were reported minimally and its impact on the image of the smiling martial law was glossed over.
On Feb. 12, 2024 at 9:00 to 11:00 am, survivors of the incident (Amroussi ‘Cheng’ Rasul, Dorothy Lim Gokioco), writer Agnes Shari Tan Aliman (The Siege of Jolo, 1974), retired judge and peace advocate Soliman Santos and Professor Elgin Salomon (Legitimizing Martial Law: Framing the Battle of Jolo, 2022) of UP Visayas will come together to recall, reframe and shed light on the event that started the unraveling of the narrative that martial law was an unchallenged national policy.
